Glass mosaic does not absorb; with porcelain you have to check the data sheet.

On the surround and coping, slip resistance is what matters: R11 and Class 3 are the usual reference where people walk barefoot on wet ground.

Mallorca adds three factors: intense sun, saline water in many pools, and hard water, which wears the grout long before the tile.

You can see and handle the collections at our showroom in Palma, Carrer de Calçat 16.

Choosing the tile for a pool is a decision you make once and then look at for twenty years. And it is a decision that translates badly to a screen: the same turquoise behaves differently under morning light and under the sun at seven in the evening, and a single tessera held in your hand tells you nothing about a twelve-metre run of it filled with water.

This guide sets out what actually has to be decided — material, zone, finish, colour — and ends where it should end: in front of the pieces.

Three materials, three different jobs

Glass mosaic

Small tesserae, usually 2.5 cm, mounted on mesh so they can be laid in sheets. Their virtue is that the sheet folds: it climbs a Roman step, turns a tight radius and resolves an organic shape without forced cuts. Glass does not absorb water, so it starts with an advantage in a shell that will be full all year round.

The trade-off is the sheer quantity of grout. In a glass mosaic pool, the grouting is what decides how many years pass without trouble.

We cover it in depth in our guide to glass mosaic pool tiles.

Porcelain

A tile pressed and fired at high temperature until the body is extremely compact. For a pool you want one that declares water absorption of 0.5 % or less and is expressly rated for permanent immersion: not all porcelain is.

Its logic is the opposite of mosaic: fewer pieces, fewer joints, continuous surfaces. In a straight-sided shell the result is clean, and it lets you carry the same material — or its thicker, slip-resistant outdoor version — right through to the surround and the terrace.

If you are torn between the two, we set them against each other in glass mosaic or porcelain pool tiles.

Stone effect and Sukabumi stone

This is the third route, and the most Mediterranean. Stone-effect porcelain gives you the warmth of natural stone without its porosity or its upkeep. The Sukabumi collection by WOW, part of its Wellness line, is designed specifically for water spaces: tones running from white to deep greens and blues, a slip-resistant treatment, and a high shade variation between pieces — each tone gathers fifty randomly mixed designs — that reproduces the look of a handmade tile.

That variation is not a defect. It is the reason a Sukabumi shell reads as water rather than as an industrial surface.

Zone by zone: what to ask of each surface

Zone

What it needs

Materials that fit

Shell with curves or Roman steps

To adapt without forced cuts

Glass mosaic

Rectangular shell

Continuity and stable tone

Glass mosaic or immersion-rated porcelain

Coping and edge

Rounded edge, grip when wet

Purpose-made trim pieces

Surround

Slip resistance, comfort underfoot

Outdoor porcelain R11 / Class 3

Terrace and approach

UV and occasional frost resistance

Outdoor porcelain, also in 20 mm

The usual answer is not to pick one material but to combine them: the shell asks for one thing and the surround for another, and the point where they meet — the coping — is the one to resolve with pieces made for it.

What to look for on the data sheet

Water absorption. 0.5 % or less for permanent immersion. This is the figure that separates a suitable tile from an unsuitable one.

Slip resistance. The R rating and Class 1/2/3. Where people walk barefoot on wet ground, the usual reference is R11 and Class 3.

Frost resistance. Rare in Mallorca, but real inland.

Chemical resistance. To chlorine and, if the pool is saline, to salt.

Colour stability under light. A tone that fades over three summers shows badly across a surface that large.

If those terms read as a foreign language, our guide on how to read a tile data sheet translates them one by one. For the safety side, the guide to R9, R10 and R11 slip ratings and the one on anti-slip pool flooring explain what the regulations require and why.

Mallorca’s climate changes the requirements

A pool on the island does not work under the same conditions as one inland on the mainland, and that shifts the priorities:

Intense, prolonged sunlight. The strong-sun season is long. Colour stability and UV resistance stop being an extra.

Saline water. Many pools on the island run on salt electrolysis. The adhesive and the grout should be declared suitable for saline water, not only for chlorine.

Hard water. Limescale marks the waterline and attacks the grout before it touches the tile. In glass mosaic, that is where the real maintenance sits.

Sea air on the front line. On the coast, airborne salt also affects the surround and the metal fittings around it.

None of these rules out a material. What they change is which questions to put to the data sheet before deciding.

The colour of the water is decided here

This is the part that surprises people most: water has no colour of its own. The blue you will see is the colour of the tiling, filtered through depth and light. White gives pale turquoise; sand, a warm sea green; grey, a steel blue; black, a mirror.

It is the most expensive mistake in this decision, because you only notice it once the pool is full. Before you settle on a colour, read what colour will my pool water look like, where we show it with real examples.

The pool brands we work with

Ezarri — glass mosaic made from recycled glass.
