What is Laufen's SaphirKeramik?
Laufen presents it as a ceramic containing corundum, the mineral also found in colourless sapphire, to which the manufacturer attributes its exceptional hardness and durability. Laufen cites a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and points out that only diamond reaches 10. It introduced the material in 2013 and uses it in collections such as ILBAGNOALESSI, SONAR, Kartell, THE NEW CLASSIC, INO and VAL.
Why do SaphirKeramik washbasins look so slim?
Because the material allows walls of only 4 to 5 mm and curves with radii of 2 to 3 mm, according to Laufen. The manufacturer compares the edges: traditional ceramics need a radius of 7 to 8 mm, while with SaphirKeramik it drops to 1 or 2 mm. As an example, Laufen cites THE NEW CLASSIC countertop washbasin, with walls of only 3 mm.
How should I clean a Laufen bathroom ceramic?
Laufen recommends wiping it regularly with a damp cotton or leather cloth, which also prevents a build-up of limescale that is hard to remove. As the glaze repels water and oil, the manufacturer states that mild cleaners of pH 5 to 8 are enough, and also considers acids of pH 1 to 4 suitable. It asks you to remove any cosmetics or toothpaste residue straight away.
Are there cleaning products that could damage the glaze?
Yes. Laufen warns expressly against strongly alkaline cleaners, above pH 8, against abrasive powders and against products containing fluoride, which according to the manufacturer can attack the glaze. Different cleaning products should not be mixed with one another either.
What is the LCC finish and is it worth it?
LCC (Laufen Clean Coat) is, according to the manufacturer, a vitreous silicate ceramic coating applied over the original glaze and integrated into the piece. Laufen states that its roughness is only 4 nanometres and that it is pore-free, so limescale, dirt and bacteria have almost nothing to cling to and whatever settles comes off far more easily. The manufacturer adds that it increases resistance to aggressive cleaners and that the piece keeps its gloss over the years.
Is it a healthy and recyclable material?
Laufen states that SaphirKeramik keeps all the hygienic properties of traditional sanitary ceramics and that it is completely safe for contact with drinking water. The manufacturer also states that it is fully recyclable, just like classic sanitary ceramics, and that it needs less material and a shorter firing, which according to Laufen reduces energy use in production.
